A Journey That Changes Lives - Become A Foster Parent

Becoming a foster parent is more than just opening your home – it's about transforming lives, including your own. Fostering provides children who cannot live with their birth families the stability, care and nurturing they need to recover from trauma and build a brighter future.

For foster parents, the journey offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference while forming bonds that last a lifetime.

At Mosaic Foster Care, we understand fostering is a life-changing commitment. That’s why we’re here to guide and support you every step of the way. Whether you’re just beginning to explore fostering or ready to take the first step, Mosaic offers the resources, training and support you need to thrive.

What is Fostering?

Fostering is the act of providing a safe and nurturing home to children who cannot live with their birth families. Unlike adoption, where legal parental responsibility transfers to the adoptive parents, fostering is a temporary or long-term arrangement where foster parents work with social workers and birth families to provide day-to-day care and emotional support to prioritise the child’s welfare.

Fostering encompasses various forms, from short-term placements to long-term care, and supports children from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. At Mosaic, our focus is on long-term fostering, ensuring children have the stability they need.

For many children, fostering represents a second chance at stability and security. It’s a journey filled with challenges and rewards, where foster parents play a pivotal role in helping children overcome difficulties and develop the skills they need for a brighter future.

Our holistic approach ensures both the child and the foster family receive the support, guidance and resources they need to succeed.

Preparing Your Home for a Foster Child

Welcoming a foster child into your home is a significant step and preparation can help ensure a smooth transition for everyone involved. At Mosaic, we provide guidance on both the physical and emotional aspects of getting your home ready.

Physical Preparation:

Creating a safe, welcoming space is essential. Foster children need their own bedroom where they can feel secure and have privacy. Ensure the room is clean, furnished with basics such as a bed, wardrobe and desk and includes comforting touches like soft lighting or colourful decor.

Safety is also a priority. Check your home meets necessary safety standards, including secure locks, fire alarms and child-safe furniture.

Additionally, think about the communal areas of your home. Having a space where the family can come together for meals or activities helps foster a sense of belonging. Mosaic can provide a home safety checklist to ensure your environment is ready to meet fostering standards.

Emotional Preparation:

Adjusting to fostering can be a big change for the entire family, particularly birth children. Open communication is key. Talk with your family about the journey ahead, explaining the importance of providing a stable and nurturing environment for the foster child.

Encourage birth children to share their feelings, ask questions and express any concerns they may have. Mosaic offers resources and support specifically for birth children, helping them understand their role and adapt to the changes. Building empathy and preparing them for the adjustments in family dynamics can ease the transition.

We also recommend setting expectations early, for example, discussing house rules, routines and how to handle any challenges that may arise. Mosaic’s team is available to guide you through these conversations, ensuring everyone feels included and prepared.

Eligibility Requirements for Foster Parents

Fostering is open to people from all walks of life. At Mosaic, we value the diversity of our foster parents and believe it strengthens the fostering community. However, there are certain criteria you must meet to ensure the safety and well-being of the children in your care.

To become a foster parent, you need to:

  • Be at least 21 years old, with no upper age limit, as long as you are in good physical and emotional health.
  • Have a spare bedroom for the foster child, ensuring they have their own personal space.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to providing a stable and nurturing environment.

Foster parents come from all backgrounds and don’t need specific qualifications to apply. Mosaic provides comprehensive training to ensure you feel prepared and confident in your role.

The Application Process

The journey to becoming a foster parent is structured to ensure you are fully equipped and supported at every stage. Here’s an overview of how it all works:

  1. Initial enquiry: Reach out to Mosaic to express your interest. Your first point of contact will be Debbie, an experienced foster parent herself. Debbie brings years of first-hand experience to this role and is available to answer your questions, share her insights and help you feel confident about the path ahead.
  1. Home visit: Debbie will visit your home to discuss fostering in more detail, answer questions and assess your readiness to proceed. This visit is a two-way process, an opportunity for you to learn more about Mosaic while we ensure fostering is the right path for you.
  1. Application form: With Mosaic’s guidance, you’ll complete an application form. We’re here to assist with every step, whether that means answering your questions over the phone or providing hands-on support to make the process as stress-free as possible.
  1. Skills to Foster training: This mandatory training course provides foundational knowledge and prepares you for your fostering journey. Mosaic’s training sessions are delivered by experienced professionals who combine expertise with practical insights. Additionally, you will receive specialised training connected to Mosaic’s Smile framework, which equips you with therapeutic techniques to support children’s emotional and behavioural needs.
  1. Assessment process: A thorough assessment is conducted, including statutory checks, personal references and home studies. During this stage, Mosaic’s team works closely with you, offering guidance and support to address any questions or concerns. This personalised approach ensures you feel fully prepared for the responsibilities ahead.

While the panel makes a recommendation, the Agency Decision Maker (ADM) at Mosaic has the final approval. Mosaic provides a panel preparation pack, so you know what to expect and feel confident in presenting your application. Debbie, an experienced former Mosaic foster parent who now works as a support worker for our foster families will be present to welcome you at panel. You will also be supported during panel by your assessing social worker who will help you answer questions if you are unable to.

At Mosaic, we believe preparation and ongoing support are the cornerstones of successful fostering. Our comprehensive training programmes equip foster parents with the skills and confidence they need to thrive. One of the most common questions we hear is: “How much does it cost to be a foster parent?” Mosaic provides all training completely free of charge. This ensures fostering remains accessible to everyone.

Initial training: Preparing to foster begins with Mosaic’s free training programme. Covering essential areas such as child development and trauma-informed care, this course ensures you have the tools and confidence to provide effective support for children. By focusing on practical strategies, the training equips you to handle real-world challenges and start fostering with confidence.

This innovative programme builds your ability to foster resilience and growth in children, complementing the practical skills gained during your initial training.

Ongoing professional development: Fostering is a journey of continuous learning. Whether it’s learning about attachment theory or exploring strategies for responding to behavioural challenges, our training is tailored to meet your needs.

At Mosaic, our goal is to empower you with the tools and confidence you need to provide the best possible care for children. By investing in your development and supporting you at every stage, we help you build a fulfilling and impactful fostering journey.

Matching and Placement: Finding the Right Fit

The matching and placement stage is one of the most anticipated yet nerve-wracking parts of the fostering journey. At Mosaic, we understand the apprehension that new foster parents may feel. Questions about whether they’ll be the right fit for the child, or how the child will adjust to their new home, are natural. That’s why our process is designed to move at a pace that feels right for everyone involved.

Our staged matching process begins with a deep understanding of your family dynamics, strengths and preferences. This allows us to carefully consider each child’s needs, background and personality to ensure a harmonious fit. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the child’s circumstances, interests and challenges before making any decisions.

To ease nerves and build confidence, Mosaic provides extensive support throughout this stage. Our team facilitates introductions gradually, giving you and the child time to get to know each other in a safe and supportive environment. We prioritise open communication, encouraging you to ask questions and voice any concerns at every step.

We also understand this is a pivotal moment for the child, who may be feeling uncertain or anxious about entering a new home. Mosaic’s therapeutic support extends to this stage, ensuring children receive the emotional reassurance they need to settle into their new environment.

By taking the time to get it right, Mosaic ensures that every match is a positive step toward a stable and nurturing home for the child and a rewarding experience for the foster parent.

Financial Support and Benefits

Fostering is not just an emotional commitment, it’s a practical one too. At Mosaic Foster Care, we ensure foster parents receive fair and generous financial support to help them provide a nurturing environment for children. Our financial package is designed to alleviate stress, allowing you to focus on what matters most – the child in your care.

Allowances: Mosaic provides competitive allowances to cover the everyday costs of fostering, including food, clothing, school supplies and extracurricular activities. These allowances are tailored to meet the specific needs of the child, ensuring no detail is overlooked.

Weekly payments: Foster parents at Mosaic receive a base payment starting at £600 per week, which increases to £700+ per week upon completion of the Training Support and Development Standards (TSD) workbook. These payments comprise of your childcare allowance and professional fostering allowance and serve as compensation for your time and commitment. For foster parents caring for multiple children, full payments are provided for each child, ensuring financial stability.

Additional financial support: Mosaic recognises the importance of respite. Foster parents receive up to three weeks of supportive foster care annually, giving you time to recharge while maintaining financial security. If extra or emergency respite is required, Mosaic steps in to negotiate with local authorities or cover the costs directly. Unused respite can also result in additional payments of up to seven days annually.

With Mosaic’s financial package, you can focus on fostering without unnecessary financial worries. Our commitment to supporting you ensures every foster parent can create a stable and loving home for the children in their care.

Responsibilities of a Foster Parent

Becoming a foster parent means embracing a multifaceted role that goes beyond simply providing a home. Foster parents are caregivers, advocates and role models, supporting children through some of the most challenging times of their lives. Mosaic ensures you are equipped to handle these responsibilities with confidence.

Providing a safe and stable environment: As a foster parent, your primary role is to create a nurturing home where children feel safe, valued and supported. This includes establishing routines, maintaining boundaries and creating a sense of security that helps children thrive.

Offering emotional support: Many children in foster care have experienced trauma or upheaval and your role involves helping them process their emotions and build resilience. Mosaic provides therapeutic training and access to resources that support you in responding to the emotional needs of children.

Collaborating with professionals: Fostering is a team effort and you will work closely with social workers, therapists and educational professionals to ensure the child’s needs are met. Mosaic facilitates these connections, ensuring you feel supported and included in the decision-making process.

Advocating for the child: From ensuring access to appropriate education and healthcare to participating in planning meetings, foster parents play a vital role in advocating for the child’s best interests. Mosaic’s team is always available to guide you through these processes.

Building positive relationships: Fostering often involves maintaining connections with the child’s birth family where appropriate. As a foster parent, you may help facilitate these relationships through sharing updates or transporting children to birth family visits (not through direct supervision of visits) ensuring the child feels connected to their identity and heritage.
