Age Limits for Foster Care Bedroom Requirements in the UK

One of the key aspects of fostering is ensuring that a foster child’s bedroom meets UK regulations, including suitability based on age limits. Providing a safe, appropriate space is essential but how do age restrictions affect bedroom requirements?

Do Age Limits Affect Foster Care Bedroom Requirements?

The general rule in UK fostering regulations is that each foster child must have their own bedroom, regardless of age. However, there are some exceptions based on specific circumstances.

When Can a Foster Child Share a Bedroom?

While fostering rules usually require separate rooms, there are rare cases where bedroom sharing may be permitted, depending on the child's age and relationship:

  • Babies under two years old – In fostering-for-adoption placements, babies may be allowed to sleep in a cot in the foster parent’s room. However, this is not typically allowed in standard long-term fostering.
  • Sibling groups – Some local authorities allow young siblings to share, but only if it is assessed as being in their best interest and meets safeguarding standards.
  • Very young children (under five) – Some agencies permit children under five years old to share a bedroom, depending on individual circumstances and space suitability.

When Is Bedroom Sharing NOT Allowed?

Regardless of age, foster children cannot share a bedroom if:

  • They are not siblings.
  • One child is a teenager, and the other is a younger child.
  • It would compromise privacy, security or personal boundaries.

  • A child has experienced trauma that makes sharing inappropriate.

Why Do Older Foster Children Always Need a Separate Room?

Children over five years old are almost always required to have their own bedroom to:

  • Support their emotional development and give them a sense of security.
  • Provide personal space for homework, hobbies and relaxation.
  • Ensure privacy and independence, particularly for teenagers.

At Mosaic Foster Care, we focus on long-term therapeutic fostering, ensuring each child has their own dedicated space to feel safe and supported.

What If You Don't Have a Spare Bedroom?

If you don’t currently have a spare bedroom but are considering fostering in the future, chat with our team. We can provide guidance on fostering suitability, alternative ways to support children in care, and how to plan for fostering when the time is right.

Understanding age-related bedroom requirements is crucial for anyone considering fostering. While some flexibility exists for babies and siblings, the standard expectation is that every foster child has a private bedroom to ensure their well-being, independence and emotional security.
