What Is Therapeutic Fostering?
When looking for the right fostering agency for you, you may come across the phrase ‘therapeutic fostering’ a lot. It is commonly used by agencies but the wording is not always correctly applied.
Therapeutic fostering is a specialist type of foster care that focuses on the mental health and wellness of a child and the people surrounding them. Each agency will have their own strategies in place to ensure the child receives the correct support. However, here at Mosaic Foster Care, we develop individual and integrated treatments plans that focus on identifying and repairing a child’s trauma. With a team of in-house clinical therapists, we follow the most up-to-date therapeutic theories and resources to complete assessments and treatment. The benefit of having therapists within our fostering agency is that each therapist will gain a unique insight into the child’s mental wellness. The therapist’s assessment and thoughts will then be passed onto the foster parents and supporting team to ensure treatment is carried in all areas of the child’s life. For example, the work a child does with their therapist can be continued outside with the help of foster parents, social workers and teachers.
While the thought of therapeutic fostering may sound complex from the outside, as you can see, foster parents are not left alone to provide support. All we ask is that people looking to become foster parents provide a safe and stable environment for a child – enabling them to develop a sense of belonging, boundaries and consistency. We will support you with the rest!
